John Wayne Day

Today is November 11th, commonly known in the American entertainment industry as John Wayne Day in celebration of that non-serving actor's plethora of phony cowboy shoot-'em-ups and vaguely historical war movies. (I got my Vietnam draft deferrment the old-fashioned way. I volunteered for the draft, then got rejected at the Fort Des Moines induction center. They classified me 1-Y and promised to call me up when Ho Chi Minh invaded Iowa.)

Wayne was known for pompous bombast about patriotism and John Birch society conservatism, but the closest he ever got to serving in an actual shooting war was an Army training film in which he demonstrated how to use a P-38 (i.e., not the Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter plane, not the Walther P.38 pistol, but the guvmint issue P-38 C-ration can opener) for which reason U.S. Marines call it a John Wayne.

That's the polite version — the P-38 is also the dinkiest edged weapon in the Marine arsenal, frequently confiscated these days by TSA airport goons from decorated veterans who've carried one on their keychains for decades. A similar item in Australian Army kit with a stamped dimple in one end to serve as a "spoon" is called the FRED, or fucking ridiculous eating device (sic).

Wayne despised American Indians and Vietnam-era college students with "hippie" opinions, by which he meant liberals. He was owned, body and soul, by Republic Pictures, which educated generations of Americans in the delicate B-movie art of shooting first and asking questions later. The Great American Dumb-down continued for years after Marion Morrison, so it's not entirely his fault even though he had Ann Coulter's mouth and walk and cultivated both.

So, I do not celebrate John Wayne Day, but rather those solemn and silent men in my own family and among my father's veterinary colleagues who came back from WWII alive. I've known a veteran of the war in the Pacific who hated the Fourth of July because the noise of fireworks made him relive the endless threat, detonation and suspense of kamikaze attacks. He shuddered and put his jacket over his head, and we left early.

No John Wayne for me. It's tomorrow. I'd rather watch a Kia commercial.

Nice Pot!

Michelle Wie copped her first LPGA win at the beautiful Lorena Ochoa Invitational in Guadalajara, Mexico last Sunday, I notice. Pretty amazing. That should shut some of her critics up, especially those backbiting Schadenfreude types who've never made $918,659.00 in nine months before (just since Valentine's Day!) That's class.

Too bad about the ankle. It's forced her out of this week's LPGA event, where Ochoa is leading. [Update 11/23: Ochoa was tied for first this morning, but finished second.]

Safeway Classic

Gee, the way ESPN2 told it this afternoon (for less than one hour!), Michelle Wie was self-destructing with 4 bogeys. She finished the second round one under par.

Cheezit, dudes. She saw your four bogeys and raised you five birdies!

[Update: Sunday, August 30, 2009] Not too shabby, another $72 grand down the hatch. Six top ten finishes in 14 starts. At this rate, she'll sock away a million before the season's up. Wie (-11) finished tied for fourth with Ai Miyazato and Seon Hwa Lee, behind Michele Redman (3rd in the playoff), Suzann Pettersen (2nd) and M. J. Hur (1st) at -13 under par. The Korean tide continues. It's nice that Wie, an American, is part of it.

Wheeee!

Michelle Wie's die-hard detractors have nothing to cheer about this morning. She played huge (3-0-1 in her matches) and helped carry home the Solheim Cup for the Americans, driving 305 yards to beat the battling Helen Alfredsson by 1 up. The U.S. beat the Europeans 16-12.

When the Olympics finally adds eight days of team and individual Golf to the Games, the Solheim Cup will vanish in interest, because it won't be just the Americans vs. Europeans anymore. Korea, Japan, China, Mexico and Latin America are far more likely to sweep the medals when they have a chance to actually enter the competition!

Token Hawaiian at the Prom

I see Michelle Wie is the U.S. Solheim Cup's token Hawaiian this time around. Could be worse. The token grandmother is Julie Inkster, who has gular folds older than Wie.

I get the bit about it's "like the Ryder Cup," i.e., a U.S. versing Europe contest. But it's not exactly an open, izzit, and the rest of world's spectacular players (think Koreans, think Japanese, think South Africa and Oz) aren't there to hold toes to the fire. More of a Country Club prom than a meaningful golf outing.

Mexico 5 - U.S. 0 in Gold Cup

About what I expected. Now, what the heck is the Gold Cup to the FIFA World Cup? Credit to Mexico for a second period rout, starting with three unanswered goals in ten minutes that sent the U.S. team out to lunch.

I see Michelle Wie is pushing the half million dollar mark for the year, $469,541 after tying for 23rd place at the Evian World Masters. She's established herself in a short list of women golfers who can take first place in any given tournament du jour. Maybe a good sign for the Women's British Open next week...?

Bizarre

Michelle Wie gets no respect. I just watched Sybase Classic coverage for an hour, and nobody mentioned Wie, who is currently tied for sixth place at 5 under par after the second round. The only girls on camera today were white, blonde losers, except for Lincicome, who's eleven under, and defending champion Lorena Ochoa now and then. Hey, them good ol' boys at ESPN2, right?

Disgustipatin'.

[Sunday Update (5/17): I dunno what planet ESPN2 is on. Wie finished tied for third with Paula Creamer, winning $118,824, which puts her over $290,600.00 in six starts with three top-ten finishes. She's ranked second in rookie points, she'll probably finish 2009 as LPGA Rookie of the Year, her driving is almost back to where it was before Leadbetter and William Morris ruined her as a natural, she's healed and healing, and all she needs is a sumo wrestler (or Odd Job) to carry her bag at arm's length without also carrying along a lot of other golfers' baggage. But from ESPN2's point of view, she's an underachieving uppity Punahau princess who's "never won" and can't play by anybody else's rules. Misogynist chauvinistic bigotry, says I.]

Paper Cuts

And the winner is... Michelle Wie, Kraft Nabisco Open. Of course. The rest of you can go home now.

[Update 5 apr 2009] Wow, Wie! Made the cut!

Threepenny Opera in Phoenix

Michelle Wie seems to have a really bad case of nice. She needs to take a few lessons in the finer arts of sardonique from a few good Eurotrash footballers. Like Bertolt Brecht. Mac the Knife. Terry Pratchett. Of course, there was all that hot wind and sand in Phoenix today...

[Friday Update] Bogeyful second round, too. But Wie did make the cut today, at +5! Cool.

Top Ten Finish

The Wiesy haters are all clucking about how Michelle Wie choked at the SBS Open, Turtle Bay, Hawaii last week.

Uhh... choked? She finished alone in second place at her inaugural opener as a fully-fledged, card-carrying member of the LPGA. She earned $108,332 bucks before taxes. Did your 19-year-old do that?

Most of the rivals I mentally pair her with, like Natalie Gulbis (T10), Paula Creamer (T15), Morgan Pressel (T26) and the unthinkable Julie Inkster (T32), who has jowls older than Michelle Wie, barely clawed their way into the top half of the field. (Lorena Ochoa was off getting engaged to some lucky stiff in Mexico or something.)

Turtle Bay

I wonder who's tied for first, 8 under after the second round, at Turtle Bay?

[Update] Saturday, Michelle Wie came in second at seven under par, winning a mere $108,332.

Michelle Wie ends tied for 12th at CanWoop

Michelle Wie finished tied for 12th place at the 2008 Canadian Women's Open in Ottawa (Ontario). That's 75-70-69-71, tied with Jennifer Rosales and Nicole Castrale at US$36,475 apiece. Katherine Hull got the big bucks.

Technically, I guess that means Q-school in 2009. But the heck with that...!

Frankly, Wie's still got it and she proved it. She finished better than Sorenstam, Webb, Inkster, Gulbis, Ji, Pressel, Neumann, Alfredsson and a few dozen others, including some well-known names who missed the cut, my favorites being Kris Tschetter, Mhairi McKay and Ai Miyazato, none of them in the has-beens category! Wie's only problem with Q-school is likely to be boredom.

Wie is no fool, and she has her head on straight about higher education. My quess is, especially if Stanford graduate Tiger Woods will be making money with his education and not his clubs for awhile, university takes priority, and rightly so.

Michelle Wie can clean LPGA clocks in her spare time anytime she wants to. There's no rush.

Still a fan

Michelle Wie finds a little support out there now and then. Just a reminder that though the 18-year-old missed the cut at (ahem?) "Legends" in Reno-Tahoe this week, so did a ton of older guys. Can you even name who won that tournament?

It's a cruel game. But then, the whole point of golf is that normal people can't play this game. It's a natural for that better-than-thou country club cachet. Michelle Wie can play. She's a natural. She's good now, and she'll be phenomenal tomorrow, and a lot of foolish people who wish she'd just go away will vanish in the silence of their private lives.

Gee, that's surprising

What's the "Legends Reno-Tahoe Open"? It's the PGA, but no idea who'll be there. Except for Michelle Wie — good for you, kiddo. No more Crazy 88's.

OFF WITH HER HEAD!!

Over at the LPGA State Farm Classic, Michelle Wie finished her third round alone in second place, one stroke behind leader Yani Tseng.

But hey...! Forget all that. The LPGA bambergered her this afternoon for a technical violation of an arguably inane card-signing rule, a "crime" committed yesterday that has nothing to do with playing it as it lays, except that it's in the book and so conveniently available to shut her down.

Too bad. I guess some people can't stand to see this talented kid win. The world of "official" golf is full of officious draconian creeps, and grinch golf be damned if it can't clean up its miniature-minded act.

Grrrr... Deep breaths.

Ok, so the rule about signing your card is "at the heart of the honor system" and everybody is really, really sorry but it had to be done. I guess I can step back and agree that games have rules, where life has guidelines, and games can be black and white, where life has shades of gray (not to mention a million indefinably gorgeous colors), and everybody agrees to play by the rules, whereas in life everybody agrees to live and let live, guided mostly by mercy.

Because it's a game, because it's only a toy, because it's life in miniature, because it's mutually agreed, a rule is a rule is a rule and no penalty for the least infraction of a rule can possibly be injustice. That's logic. But it's Queen of Hearts logic. It's "Off with her head!" logic. And it's stupid.

Golf teaches nobody anything worth knowing about life, except that the filthy rich have the best playgrounds. If you have a talent for this absurd pastime, you have to love it for the thrill of beating the Bushwood crowd at their own game.

In the old days, in Presbyterian Scotland, maybe golf was democratic — but it was always sharpedged and bloody unfair, too. There is an old argument, remember, that golf was invented by the Devil; in Heaven, par for the course is 18.

Michelle Wie T46 at Jamie Farr Owens Corning

Michelle Wie finished mid-field, tied for 46th among the 75 who made the cut at the 2008 Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic. I'd kill to be able to post her scores.

Paula Creamer carried away the cash, no surprise.

It was kind of fun to see all the new faces, especially Rachel Hetherington and Eun-Hee Ji.

I especially enjoyed today's extended coverage, featuring college graduate anchors and intelligent commentary through the green by the best stable of golf broadcasters in the history of televised journalism, who somehow managed to weave together the top ten leader stories in a eye-catching tapestry of precisely figured shot placements and incisive banter, without once resorting to the hackneyed visual cliches of context-less putts and pointlessly backlit sandblasts out of bunkers. ESPN is to be congratu...

Oh, wait! There wasn't any TV coverage today, unless the Golf Channel had it. Now I remember...!
